Tank Mania
Tank Mania is a group project I am currently working on, it is a top-down roguelike tank brawler inspired by Wii Tanks, Risk of Rain 2, and Enter the Gungeon, it challenges you to craft overpowered builds by combining class upgrades with stackable item effects. The player fights scaling enemy hordes, builds up their synergy, and takes down bosses.
This game is set in a world in which the government is testing autonomous combat vehicles within their training grounds, you play as one of these AI-controlled tanks that goes rogue during a military training program after a military general cat spills a coffee onto the computer system running the AI, causing it to malfunction, the AI's goal then changes from being a lethal killing machine, eliminating military enemies to escaping to a tropical beach to live its life in peace, bathing in the sun, building sand castles, drinking cocktails and watching the sun set into the sea next to a tank partner.
Your goal is to help the tank escape the military bases by defeating other tanks trying to prevent its escape, getting money to upgrade the tank, making it stronger and more powerful, and eliminating bosses to unlock gates to progress to the next military training environments, such as; a dessert, the arctic, an urban setting, a woodlands and more.
This story will be communicated to the player through an intro scene which will play when the player begins the game, below is a basic rough story board of what this would potentially look like, we are also considering adding short cutscenes/text boxes before boss battles to reference the storyline throughout the game, keeping it relevant, immersing you into the world more and giving the bosses more character and personality whilst also adding some humour to the game. As well as this, when you beat the game there will be a short cutscene of the tank watching a sunset on a beach.
We wanted to keep a light-hearted and comedic feel to this game, allowing us to have more fun and creativity with the design and characters in the game, contrasting with the typical serious theme of other military tank games.
